Bio

My name is Arjo Mitra. I am the only child of two educators, so I like to say that I was born to be a student. Many of my earliest memories are in the company of books - I devoured anything I could read about dinosaurs and animals, and later, philosophy and spirituality.

From a young age I also had an interest in sports, calisthenics, and strength training. I tried everything from baseball and cross country to calisthenics and strength training.

It wasn't until I discovered dance at the age of 18 that I found the connection between mind and body that I had been searching for.

To this day, I remember that first experience of dance - the music moved my body and I had no say in the matter. By trusting in the groove, I found new trust in myself.

Since then, I have devoted myself to studying taichi, yoga, dance, and object manipulation (also known as flow arts or juggling).

It has been my great pleasure to grow and share these crafts. You can see my Artist / Teaching Resume here.

Mission

em·bod·i·ment

noun

  1. tangible or visible form of an idea, quality, or feeling.

We can find embodiments of any idea, principle, or quality all around us. Strength is embodied in the galloping of a horse, the crashing of a waterfall, in a yogi holding Warrior pose and in a person choosing to show kindness to an adversary.

The practices we cultivate in turn cultivate us.

A yoga practice can help develop not just physical flexibility, strength, and balance, but also a holistic adaptability, resilience, and focus. The feeling of surrendering to the care of a parent is at hand during balasana (child's pose); the vast lightness of the cumulonimbus flows through our fingertips during the famous taichi movement Wave Hands Like Clouds; the inspiration that we find all around us lives inside of us.

And when we realize this truth, we know ourselves to be on the path of mastery

The mission of Dance Like Fire is to share the fruits I have found on this path and inspire you in your own journey --
